Infinitely Many Monkeys, on Infinitely Many Typewriters Would Easily Produce 4.21 MiB of Data

One of the best reads I’ve had in a while is I Was A Pre-Teen Christian Supercomputer! by John Brownlee of Boing Boing Gadgets. I understand that schools like this are not the norm in the United States, but I cannot help but wonder why the culture condones feeding these ideas to impressionable youth. Commenters on the article provide further memories, anecdotes and discussion on Colby and his propagandic brethren.

Colby seems to exist solely to teach children not to question authority. Is that meant to placate them with Christianity? With the establishment? There is a significant element of libertarianism in the neoconservative movement, and that is why I cannot understand where Colby is rooted. For people who claim to desire freedom (‘Live free or die.’) and refuse the government from muddling in their affairs, why so readily accept the voice of authority? Or at least, why teach their children to?

As a side note, I think Colby is a ridiculous name for a computer. I only see it is a reference to COBOL.
